A Unique Natural Environment

Discover Madagascar’s flora and fauna through Resort Activities

Local Climatology

The region of Boina (or Boeny), whose prefecture is Mahajanga, is one of Madagascar’s warmest regions.
Officially, there are two climatic seasons: the dry season - from April to November and the wet season - which lasts from December to March.
The tropical climate is predominant here; temperatures can reach up to 40 ° C. The rainy season lasts from November to February. Storms are spectacular, but brief.

Flora

Despite deforestation, vegetation abounds in Madagascar - it is said to be a "Nature Sanctuary." Antsanitia’s region is situated within tropical savanna, with palms and deciduous trees.

Dry primary forest, as well as secondary forest also occurs onsite. For example, there are seven species of baobab trees (few of them being within the restaurant’s tropical garden). In this garden, you will find Malagasy species such as prickly pears, and magnificent, colorful bougainvilleas. Past the village of Antsanitia, mango trees, eucalyptus trees and ravinala (the so-called "traveler's tree") mainly appear. See "authentic village tours". Mangroves are made of various tropical trees and shrubs. Indeed, they grow in coastal sediments. In Antsanitia's mangrove, you might find three families of tropical trees.

Other species may grow in these mangroves, such as coconut palms on sandy soils, for instance.

Sea, tide, beach and sand

A series of sandy beaches and rocky bays follow one another all along the shoreline.

A beautiful beach lies just by the hotel; there, you will be able to meet local fishermen and boatmen.
On the other side of the Morira, you will access a 10-miles-long white sand beach. See "Coastal Walks"».

Wildlife

Antsanitia borders the Mozambique Channel. It offers a rich variety of marine, aquatic and terrestrial life. The sea is home to many species: fishes, crustaceans and sea turtles live there. You may discover local sea life through our «traditional boat-fishing experience». Mangroves are housing many birds: waders, ibis, herons, egrets, kingfishers...

imgFine sediment habitats are hosting species like the Scylla serrata (mangrove crab). Explore the mangroves with our «pirogue boat cruise on river Morira».

You could also navigate a canoe alone.
On Antsanitia’s site, you may come across different types of chameleons, lizards with sucker fingers called geckos, as well as uroplatus. This area teems with insects and rare butterflies. You will see animals of all sizes, shapes and colors. In Madagascar, the lemur is the king of wildlife, with about thirty different species

Most snakes are harmless (stay careful anyway). However, beware of scorpions and centipedes: their sting can be very unpleasant.
